Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is a non-profit tax-exempt legal action antismoking organization based in the United States that has been solely devoted to the many problems of smoking for over 40 years.

Its principal activity is to serve as the legal action arm of the nonsmoking community, bringing or joining in legal actions concerning smoking, and insuring that the voice of the nonsmoker is heard. It also serves as an advocate of the nonsmokers' rights movement.

ASH's executive director, John F. Banzhaf, III, has been called the "Ralph Nader of the Tobacco Industry," "Mr. Anti-Smoking," and the "Man behind the Ban on Cigarette Commercials". He is perhaps the best known spokesman for the anti-smoking community, and has frequently discussed and debated many topics related to smoking. The Touchmark Foundation is dedicated to providing programs to help assure that seniors have what is necessary to make their lives comfortable, satisfying, and pleasant. Its work focuses on two primary programs:

• Increasing the number of health care professionals in order to meet the health care needs of the growing number of seniors.

• Providing philanthropic support to low-income seniors to improve their physical, social, spiritual, and intellectual lives.

I. Health Professions Scholarship Program

Now, and in the foreseeable future, we face a severe shortage of nurses and other health care professionals. This shortage will be exacerbated as the “baby-boomer” generation ages.

To address this critical shortage, the Touchmark Foundation provides scholarships to those who wish to pursue an education leading to a certificate or degree in the health care professions. Those who are currently employed in health care field may seek financial help for the cost of tuition for course work or training that will specifically enhance their geriatric health care skills.

Scholarships for Nursing Instructors

An equally urgent need is for additional nursing instructors to teach the next generations of students, particularly in the field of geriatric nursing. Without additional faculty to teach, educational institutions will not be able to expand nursing programs and increase the number of students graduating with nursing degrees. Expanding the teacher ranks is a vitally important step in addressing our nation’s critical nursing shortage. For example, Touchmark Foundation is partnering with Oregon Health & Sciences University to support five Ph.D. nursing students in the John A. Hartford Foundation Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence.

II. Senior Benevolent Fund

The Senior Benevolent Fund will provide financial assistance to low-income seniors for the purpose of improving their physical, social, spiritual and intellectual lives. Individuals and non-profit organizations may apply for grants for materials, equipment, activities, and programs that are intended to enhance the well being of seniors who are experiencing financial difficulties. In this effort, the Touchmark Foundation will routinely seek out opportunities to partner with area providers of services for seniors.

One of our new project this year is the Low Vision Project. Through this program, the Foundation is placing video magnification systems in three communities to support seniors with macular degeneration and other low vision challenges. We are excited about the potential to build new program focusing on vision health. Based on the outcomes of these pilot programs, the low vision project may be expanded to additional communities.

A second important program is the Holiday Food Box program. In the U.S., more than one in every 10 households are hungry or unsure if they will be able to acquire enough food for their next meals. The statistic is startling, but, what does it really mean? It means that there are seniors and families all around us who must rely on food donations to avoid hunger. They are our neighbors. They are our community.

The Touchmark Foundation annual Holiday Food Box project is designed to help alleviate hunger. Boxes of nutritious, shelf-stable food are delivered directly to seniors and families in need. Thousands of boxes have been delivered since the inception of the project.

The Myelin Project aims to accelerate research on myelin repair. Myelin can be destroyed by hereditary neurodegenerative disorders such as the leukodystrophies, and by acquired diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Since myelin loss leads to the reduction or blockage of nerve impulse conduction, myelin regrowth would logically restore conduction in diseases for which therapies capable of halting demyelination have already been found (e.g., phenylketonuria, Refsum's disease, which are treatable, mainly through restricted diets). But regenerating myelin may also be beneficial in demyelinating diseases for which no effective treatment has been developed (e.g., multiple sclerosis). Indeed, the new myelin may well be able to withstand attack by the primary demyelinating agent, either permanently or for a long period of time.

To attain its objectives, The Myelin Project relies on three major strategies: prompting researchers to work as a team and coordinating their research efforts, promoting interaction between researchers and laypeople, and rapid financing of practically oriented experiments.

Our mission is to provide financial assistance for educational opportunities and bereavement counseling to children that have experienced the loss of a parent. Statistics estimate that by age 15, over 3 million children in the United States will experience the loss of a family member. Moreover, research suggests that approximately 90% of students will experience the loss of a family member before finishing high school (Ewalt & Perkins, 1979). In 1983, research found that by age 16, one child out of five will have lost a parent.

A Caring Hand is a not-for-profit granting organization which raises funds to provide educational opportunities and bereavement counseling to children that have lost a parent and therefore, have lost the ability to afford a quality education. We plan on helping such children with educational levels from pre-school to graduate school. Education helps shape our children and prepare them to be our leaders. Without giving children the opportunity to obtain a quality education, we are jeopardizing our children's future. A child that loses a parent has already lost enough without having to lose the opportunity to receive a quality education.

The organization was launched as a direct result of the death of Billy Esposito on September 11, 2001.

Our vision is to help children that have lost a parent and, as a result, have lost the opportunity to receive the educational opportunities and bereavement counseling they deserve.

Physicians have not traditionally engaged in the public debate over personal choice, family planning, abortion, teenage pregnancy and sexuality education issues. Yet it is doctors who deliver (or don’t deliver) these services and provide critical information on these issues to their patients on a daily basis. PRCH’s mission is to enable physicians to become more active and visible in support of universal reproductive health. We believe that all people should have the knowledge, equal access to quality services and freedom of choice to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions. A large number of our physician-members practice in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, but many are pediatricians, fertility doctors, cardiologists, neurologists, radiologists and others. PRCH, in turn, works with medical and women’s health organizations that share an interest in expanding and improving the medical options and quality of services available to American women and their families. We aim to enhance and complement, not duplicate, services provided by these groups.

Our History

PRCH was founded in 1992 by a small committee of concerned physicians in New York City, where we opened our first national office in 1995. We also maintain an office in San Francisco, which enables us to conduct our recruiting, organizing, advocacy and educational activities at the grassroots level. The organization is steered by a Board of Directors comprised of leading physicians in reproductive healthcare, as well as resident and medical student representatives.

Our Programs

PRCH has three interconnecting program departments that respond to the needs of our physician-members and the public for information and services: Public Policy and Community Organizing, Communications, and Medical Education. The Christopher Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.

The Christopher Reeve Foundation's roots stretch back to 1982 when the American Paralysis Association was formed by a group of people that refused to accept the prevailing notion that the spinal cord, once injured, could not be repaired. The founders of the American Paralysis Association had an unwavering belief that researchers and neuroscientists, working together, would find a way to connect and regenerate the damaged nerves and cells that result in paralysis.

Christopher sought out the organization following his injury in 1995. As Christopher said, "I have always been a crusader for causes I believe in. This time, the cause found me." Christopher shared the American Paralysis Association's belief in a cure and lent his name, passion and drive to the organization which ultimately became known as the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Together, we've come a long way. The research progress in recent years has been outstanding. Awareness and perception of spinal cord injuries has shifted dramatically, both in the scientific community as well as in the general public. Today, our belief in a cure is shared by the neuroscientists, researchers, clinicians and, perhaps most importantly, thousands of people living with spinal cord injuries and their families. The fragile nature of interdependence among nations, threatened by four lethal world conditions -- overpopulation, unequal distribution of resources, deterioration of the environment and the chaotic status of human rights -- is the context in which The Fund for Peace must operate.
Peace as the mere absence of war is not a sufficient objective. Our projects -- whether they inform the American public about a crisis, testify before Congress on U.S. policy, or publish reports about dangerous arms races -- confront issues that arise from the fact of interdependence and the conditions that threaten cooperation among nations. It isn't enough, however, to note these conditions and to say vaguely that we are doing something about them.
The Fund exerts two principal efforts to affect decisionmakers. First, it promotes scholarship to define problems and to provide competent answers. Second, it uses the knowledge and information it obtains to participate in debates and inform the public of the facts.
It cannot be emphasized too strongly how much these two efforts -- scholarship and public engagement -- go together. The Fund's primary task is to correct conditions that threaten human survival through a combination of scholarship and active civic education.

The face of homelessness today reflects the faces of all New Yorkers; children…families…men and women…senior citizens…working people…people who are ill and disabled…and people of all races and faiths.

Underlying all of our work at The Partnership for the Homeless is the firmly held belief that we can end homelessness.

And our success lies in a two-pronged approach: combining direct services to help individuals and families, along with advocacy that addresses the societal problems at the root of today’s rampant homelessness.

During our 23 years of helping homeless New Yorkers, we have gained a wealth of knowledge about the interplay between structural and individual factors that lead to homelessness. This experience—from street outreach and crisis intervention to finding housing and supporting individuals and families in their pursuit of self-sufficiency—enables us to speak with authority on the needs of homeless people and to press for improvements in government policies and practices.

Our work centers on preventing and ending homelessness, and we are proud to be part of a vibrant community that worked with and convinced city government to adopt a plan that no longer focuses simply on short-term emergency measures to address the problem. This new emphasis provides a more fertile environment for strengthening our dual approach of advocacy and direct services and for extending our work directly into the city’s most vulnerable communities.

With homelessness rising and reaching across so many segments of our city, The Partnership’s work has become more urgent than ever. Over the past two years, we designed and implemented effective new strategies to help today’s homeless New Yorkers move from the streets and shelters to affordable housing. And our clients, our many dedicated volunteers, and our friends like you have joined with us. Together, we are building a powerful voice for homeless New Yorkers.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) will end homelessness among veterans by shaping public policy, promoting collaboration, and building the capacity of service providers.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by a 13-member board of directors — is the resource and technical assistance center for a national network of community-based service providers and local, state and federal agencies that provide emergency and supportive housing, food, health services, job training and placement assistance, legal aid and case management support for hundreds of thousands of homeless veterans each year.

NCHV also serves as the primary liaison between the nation’s care providers, Congress and the Executive Branch agencies charged with helping them succeed in their work. NCHV’s advocacy has strengthened and increased funding for virtually every federal homeless veteran assistance program in existence today.

Under a technical assistance grant awarded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, NCHV provides guidance and information about program development, administration, governance and funding to all of the nation’s homeless veteran service providers.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries.
Each year, MSF doctors, nurses, logisticians, water-and-sanitation experts, administrators, and other medical and non-medical professionals depart on more than 3,800 field assignments. They work alongside more than 22,500 locally hired staff to provide medical care.
In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF provides health care, rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centers for malnourished children, and offers mental health care. When needed, MSF also constructs wells and dispenses clean drinking water, and provides shelter materials like blankets and plastic sheeting.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation creates a future of hope for children and families worldwide by eradicating pediatric AIDS, providing care and treatment to people with HIV/AIDS, and accelerating the discovery of new treatments for other serious and life-threatening pediatric illnesses.

In 1988, Ariel Glaser painted how she envisioned the world — as a beautiful garden kept bright with sunshine and surrounded by love. Her inspiration serves as the Foundation's logo, representing hope for children everywhere.

In 1981, Elizabeth Glaser was infected with the AIDS virus through a blood transfusion, and unknowingly passed it on to both of her children. The Glaser family's tragedy inspired the creation of the Pediatric AIDS Foundation in 1988. Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. For the 17th year in a row, Children's Hospital Boston has been rated one of the nation's top hospitals specializing in pediatric care, according to a survey by U.S.News & World Report.

Patient Care

Children's Hospital Boston is a 342-bed comprehensive center for pediatric health care. As one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States, Children's offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age. (Our Advanced Fetal Care Center can begin interventions at 15 weeks gestation, and in some situations we treat adults.)
Children's records approximately 17,000 inpatient admissions each year, and our more than 160 outpatient programs and emergency services care for more than 450,000 patients annually. Additionally, the hospital performs 22,000 surgical procedures and 170,000 radiological examinations every year.
The hospital's clinical staff includes approximately 875 active medical and dental staff, as well as 775 residents and fellows, 1,235 nursing and patient personnel as well as 4,613 other full and part-time employees. We also have a diverse, trained team of more than 764 volunteers.

Children's is the primary pediatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where most of our physicians hold faculty appointments.

Research

Children's is also home to the world's largest pediatric research facility, with a staff of 1,200 driven scientists and staff. Our current initiatives have attracted a record $120 million in funding, including more federal funding than is awarded to any other pediatric facility.
In the John F. Enders Pediatric Research laboratories, named for the Children's researchers and Nobel Prize recipient who cultured the polio and measles viruses, hundreds of laboratory researchers and physician investigators search for answers to some of the most perplexing diseases.
In 2003, a generous philanthropic gift made the 295,000 square foot Karp Family Research Laboratories possible. The building increased our research space by more than 60 percent. The Karp family gift is just one of many important gifts that support Children's vital research enterprise.
Through the years, scientists at Children's have set the pace in pediatric research, identifying treatments and therapies for many debilitating diseases, including those of adulthood.

The number of visitors to the site has increased amazingly over the last couple of years, and it keeps on going from strength to strength. The reason? Our audience comes from every walk of life, including students, teachers, people who are HIV+ and their families & friends. Many of our readers are from the US or the UK - where we are based - but we also have many visitors from around the world. This is reflected in our content - wherever you're from, there'll be something for you on AVERT.org . . . and we guarantee that if you look around, you'll learn at least one important thing by the time you leave.
And don't forget to come back - our pages change all the time to keep up with what's current. The website is run by AVERT, an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK which, before the days of the internet, used to produce informational booklets, posters and fliers giving people the information they needed to protect themselves from HIV. It now runs the AVERT.org web site started in 1995, at a time when cyberspace was still fairly empty. Back then the site was only a handful of web-pages, read by only 30 people a month! We were one of the first AIDS charities to go online, and since we did so, the site has grown and changed amazingly.
where are we now?
During 2005 we supplied more than 18 million pages of information to an estimated 5 million visitors who come from every corner of the world - from Europe, America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and South America. The main reason that the site is here is to inform people, help people to protect themselves, and ultimately, to save people's lives.

There are two types of diabetes. In type 1, the body produces very little or no insulin, and the onset of the disease typically occurs in childhood or early adulthood. People with type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections to stay alive. In type 2, the body does not produce enough insulin, or cannot properly utilize this essential hormone. Type 2 is the most common form of the disease, accounting for 90-95% of all cases, and often emerges later in life. Diabetes is growing in epidemic proportions. In 1997, more than 180,000 Americans died from complications associated with diabetes.

At the American Diabetes Association, our mission is a bold one: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. We are a 57-year-old organization that is supported by more than one million volunteers across the United States, as well as a professional society of more than 14,000 physicians, scientists, nurses, dietitians, podiatrists, pharmacists, social workers, educators, and other heath professionals.

In 1865, William Booth, an ordained Methodist minister, aided by his wife Catherine, formed an evangelical group dedicated to preaching among the “unchurched” people living in the midst of appalling poverty in London’s East End. Booth’s ministry recognized the interdependence of material, emotional and spiritual needs. In addition to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, Booth became involved in the feeding and shelter of the hungry and homeless and in rehabilitation of alcoholics. Booth and his followers, originally known as The Christian Mission, became The Salvation Army in 1878, when that organization evolved on a quasi-military pattern. Booth became “the General” and officers’ ranks were given to his ministers. The Salvation Amy has functioned successfully within that unusual structure for more than a century. As of 2005, its outreach has been expanded to include more than 100 countries, and the Gospel is preached by its officers in more than 160 languages.

Services

The basic social services developed by William Booth have remained an outward visible expression of the Army’s strong religious principles. In addition, new programs that address contemporary needs have been established. Among these are disaster relief services, day care centers, summer camps, holiday assistance, services for the aging, AIDS education and residential services, medical facilities, shelters for battered women and children, family and career counseling, vocational training, correction services, and substance abuse rehabilitation. More than 30 million a year are aided in some form by services provided by The Salvation Army.

Structure

The General, with headquarters in London, is the international leader of The Salvation Army. In the United States, the functions of The Salvation Army are coordinated by the National Commander, whose office is at the national headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. For administrative purposes, the nation is divided into four territories: the Central Territory with headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois, the Eastern Territory with headquarters in West Nyack, New York, the Southern Territory with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Western Territory with headquarters in Long Beach, California. Each territory is under leadership of a territorial commander. Nationwide uniformity of policy is the responsibility of the Commissioners’ Conference, whose membership includes the National Commander, the Territorial Commanders, the National Chief Secretary (COO) and the four Territorial Chief Secretaries. Standing commissions devise and evaluate strategic initiatives to further the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army and then make recommendations to the Commissioners’ Conference. Territories are made up of smaller units known as divisions. There are 40 divisions in the United States and each is headed by a divisional commander. Divisions consist of corps centers for worship and service, which are the basic units of The Salvation Army, and various specialized centers. The functions of each corps include religious and social services which are adapted to local needs. Each corps is under the supervision of a corps officer.

The Salvation Army is a participating member in various religious and human services associations, coalitions and conferences having similar principles and practices. Legally, each of the four Salvation Army territories in the United States functions as a tax-exempt corporation with the National Commander as Chairperson of the Board. Fundraising Salvation Army fund-raising campaigns are conducted on a local and regional basis. There is no fund-raising at the national level. The normal source of funds are the traditional Christmas kettle campaigns, direct-mail programs, corporate and foundation gifts, planned giving, and government contracts. In most areas, The Salvation Army is a member agency of local affiliates of the United Way of America where such affiliation has proven to be beneficial to The Salvation Army. The organization’s stewardship of its funding is noted throughout philanthropy; 83 cents of every dollar collected by the Army goes directly to client service – among the highest percentages of any non-profit in the world. Advisory Organizations Advisory organizations, comprised of representative community, corporate, and civic leaders, perform a valuable service by providing advice and acting as liaison between The Salvation Army and the community. The advisory organizations interpret community needs to The Salvation Army and facilitate the development of resources, enabling The Salvation Army to respond to critical community needs. A national advisory board makes its recommendations to the Commissioners’ Conference. The People The Salvation Army’s membership consists of 3500 officers, 60,000 employees, 113,000 soldiers, 430,000 adherents , and more than 3.5 million volunteers. Adherents are people who have elected not to be enrolled as soldiers but consider The Salvation Army to be their place of worship. Soldiers are those who have signed a declaration of faith and practice known as A Soldiers’ Covenant and worship and serve through a local corps. Employees are personnel hired to perform specialized duties in fields such as social services, youth service, accounting, development, law, and property. Volunteers are those who give freely of their time, enabling The Salvation Army to meet far more community needs than otherwise possible. Officers are the clergy of The Salvation Army.
